The nature of reality, having two halves, gives way the the two historical approaches used to learn about reality.
Just an aside...
Reality has two 'parts'. One is directly accessible to evaluation and one only indirectly. Both, however are real, i.e. not imaginary or dependent on the belief of the observer. They are infact, quite independant of what we think, or even if we exist.
The math part is just a way to confirm in which half something lies. If you can divide it in two and get 1/2 as much, it's physical. If you share amongst two people, as you would an idea, and it's not diminishe, then it's nonphysical. Easy enough.
